Student Direct Stream
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is an expedited study permit processing program for those who are applying to study in Canada at a post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI). The SDS is available to legal residents who also reside in Pakistan, but to be eligible, applicants must meet specific requirements by providing documentation upfront.
The standard processing time for SDS applications is 20 calender days but to speed the process up, you must give your biometrics as soon as possible & meet all the eligibility requirements.
The eligibility requirements include:
- residency in Pakistan (or any of the other 13 countries)
- have an acceptance letter from a post-secondary designated learning institution
- live outside of Canada when you apply
- have proof you have paid your tuition for your first year of study
- have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAN$10,000
- have a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) from the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration
- This is only if you’re planning to study in Quebec
- get a medical exam before you apply (if you need one)
- get a police certificate before you apply (if you need one)
- have your most recent secondary or post-secondary school transcript(s)
- have a language test result that shows either:
- an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic score of overall 6.0 or IELTS – General of CLB 7 (overall 6.0 with no band less than 6.0) in each skill (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), or
- a Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) minimum score of 60 or
- a Pearson Testing English – Academic (PTE) minimum score of 60 or
- a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Educational Testing Service (ETS)-Internet Based Testing (iBT) minimum score of 83 or
- a Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) score that is equal to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of at least 7 in each skill (reading, writing, speaking and listening)

Standard Permit
The study permit is a document that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada. A study permit is usually valid for the length of your study program, plus an extra 90 days.
The eligibility requirements for a study permit are as follows:
- you are enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI)
- prove you have enough money to pay for your:
- tuition fees
- living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and
- return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
- obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate (if required)
- are in good health and get a medical exam (if required)
- prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires
You must apply online for a study permit before you come to Canada. Some people can apply for a study permit from within Canada and in some cases, you can apply when you arrive in Canada at the port of entry.
